You will be allocated into a group to complete this assessment task.

  1. Select a complex patient (one with at least one comorbidity)
    undergoing a procedure that requires a form of anaesthesia. Examples
    may include;
    • General anaesthesia
    • Central Neural Blockade (Epidural/Spinal)
    • Local anaesthesia with sedation
    • Total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA)
    o TIVA / Manual control infusion (MCI)
    o TIVA / Target Control Infusion (TCI)
    • Sedation
    • Combination of any of the above
  2. Discuss the case with your group members and identify the rationale
    for the selection of anaesthesia chosen by the treating anaesthetist. Only
    briefly discuss the surgical procedure, as the focus is on the anaesthesia
    choice.
    Support your discussion with the applied pathophysiology and
    references to justify your responses. Risk factors and other significant
    indicators which extend the discussion should be included.
    Comorbidities / risk factors may include:
    • Pregnancy
    • Obesity
    • Paediatric
    • Geriatric
    Respiratory disease
    • Liver disease
    • Renal disease
    Cardiovascular disease
    • Neurological compromise
    • Circulatory failure (multiple trauma, shock, sepsis)
    • Coagulation disorders
    Enter the group within 72 hours of the discussion opening in week 2 to
    clarify your topic/case with your group members.
    *You may use the same anaesthetic approach as fellow students, as this
    will differ with each surgical specialty. For example, a general anaesthetic
