Compare and Contrast Theories

Assignment 2 (Topic 2): Theory Contrast and Comparison Objectives Topic 2 gives you the opportunity to examine critical theories in-depth, relate these theories to current research in the field, and compare and contrast these theories. Instructions 1. Choose two theories from the course (e.g., Piaget’s Cognitive Developmental Theory, Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory, Information Processing Theory, Ecological Systems Theory, Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory, etc.). 2. Describe each theory in detail. o What are the central claims of the theory? o How are those claims applied to development? o What are some strengths and weaknesses of the theory? 3. Include three research studies related to each theory from the last 15 years (six total): You can find these research studies by performing a PsycINFO search via the Athabasca University Library (refer to Assignment 1 for instructions). 4. Describe each study in detail. The description should answer the questions outlined in Assignment 1. 5. Discuss the evidence that each research study provides for and / or against each theory. Alternatively, if the study claims to provide support for or against the theory, but you disagree, explain why. 6. Make sure that you compare and contrast the two theories (i.e., integrate the information) and provide a conclusion. o What are the similarities and differences between the two theories? o What is your conclusion about the theories and the evidence pertaining to those theories? 7. Submit a paper of approximately 10 pages (2500 words), varying from about 7 pages to about14 pages (1750-3500 words). The number of pages may vary for the sections, depending on the amount of detail involved in each theory and research study. Your paper should include three sections: Theory 1, Theory 2, and Contrast and Comparison. o Theory 1: This section will be about four pages (including the description of the three studies). o Theory 2: This section will be about four pages (including the description of the three studies). o Contrast and Comparison: This section will be about two pages. Marking Matrix for Assignment 2: Topic 2 Note that the report is to be written in APA style, which you may research by referring to The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.), the AU Centre for Psychology’s APA (6th ed.) Style Tutorial (http://psych.athabascau.ca/html/APA6/), the AUPR Writing Skills resources, and the course textbook. You are expected to use APA format for the title page, in-text citations, and the reference list. Section Description Points Theory 1 Discusses the theory accurately in detail; the three articles are directly related to the theory; articles are discussed accurately in detail and tied directly back to the theory. 9-10 /10 Theory is clear, research articles are related, research articles are discussed fairly clearly and accurately, and the relationship between research and theory is included (could be more detailed). 7-8 Some aspects of the theory and research articles are unclear or inaccurate. 5-6 Several aspects of the theory and research articles are unclear or inaccurate, or articles are not included. 3-4 Several aspects of the theory are unclear or inaccurate, and significant research is missing. 1-2 No theory or research is included. 0 Theory 2 Discusses the theory accurately in detail; the three articles are directly related to the theory; articles are discussed accurately in detail and tied directly back to the theory. 0 Comparison and Contrast Excellent general statements of similarities and differences along with specific details. Research articles are used as support for arguments. 9-10 /10 General similarities and differences are clear, and some specific examples and research arguments are included (could be more detailed). 7-8 Some aspects of the comparison and argumentation are unclear, but the general idea is present. 5-6 Several aspects of the comparison and argumentation are unclear or inaccurate. 3-4 Very little contrast and comparison is provided, or details are inaccurate. 1-2 No contrast or comparison is provided
