KnitR3
Now we’ll integrate more things into our investigation.
First, fix any errors in your previous knitR work before continuing.
Now we’re going to dig into our cars some more. Start by using the lattice library to do a histogram of the mtcars data we’ve been working with. Show a histogram of the mileage of each engine based upon the number of cyl in a single plot. Do the same thing for transmission type and number of gears. Write some thoughts about the results of these observations.
Now we’re going to do some modeling. Instead of doing an aov table of effects, do an aov table of means, modeling mpg and cyl. Do the same thing with mpg and am, and mpg and gear. Write about these observations.
Finally, let’s do a linear model. Write about what you’re about to do, then create a linear model for mpg against weight from the original mtcars dataset. Run a coef of the Model and report it out. Explain in your paper what this accomplishes. Then plot the actual mpg data against the linear model you got earlier from the slope and intercept. Play with some of the other useful functions available. USE LATEX FOR THIS QUESTION

Write a summary of the work you’ve done, and what you believe these observations demonstrate

For this exercise, you need to watch the Nielsen Media Research Video Case.

This exercise relates to Chapter 4 in your textbook.
For this exercise, you need to watch the Nielsen Media Research Video Case.
To receive credit for this exercise, create a new journal entry and answer the following questions:
Nielsen has sister companies that track Internet activity around the world, box office receipts, and the retail sales of audio and video entertainment products and books. Who are the likely clients of these companies, and how would they use its research?
Much of Nielsen’s research is still reported manually by the subjects of its surveys. Do you think this method provides reliable and unbiased results? Why or why not? Why do you think Nielsen has a policy of prohibiting volunteer participants in its television surveys?
What are some advantages and disadvantages of the newer methods of automated data collection that both Nielsen and Google are exploring? Are there any privacy questions at issue in these new methods? How would a marketing research company deal with them?

Carbon Taxes

Policy Application: Carbon Taxes
A group of prominent Republicans have proposed a carbon tax to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.[1] The proposal includes a revenue-neutral[2] carbon tax that would start at $40/ton and then gradually increase over time. The proposal is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 28% by 2025.[3] All of the funds raised from the carbon tax would be returned to Americans on an “equal and quarterly basis via dividend checks, direct deposits or contributions to their individual retirement accounts.”2 A family of four is expected to receive around $2,000 in the first year of the program.
Assume: The proposal is enacted and that each U.S. citizen receives $500 per year. The X-axis on your graph should be “Gallons of fossil fuel consumed per year” and the
Y-axis should be “Money spent on all other goods per year.”
Do you think gasoline consumption is a normal or inferior good? Explain and keep this in mind when you answer parts (b) and (c).
Evaluate this proposal using indifference curves and budget constraints for a consumer who doesn’t consume a lot of gasoline (“Prius”). What effect will this proposal likely have on Prius’s gasoline consumption? Prius’s utility?
Assume there are two individuals (“Hummer” and “Prius”) and that they earn the same annual income.
Evaluate this proposal using indifference curves and budget constraints for a consumer who consumes a lot of gasoline (“Hummer”). What effect will this proposal likely have on Hummer’s gasoline consumption? Hummer’s utility?

Gift Taxes

Ann, age 61, and Bob, age 62, have a large number of investments in common stock of publicly traded corporations, some municipal bonds, and a money market cash account worth several million dollars. In addition, they own a ranch in Texas that may be worth $100,000,000. They have a large family consisting of three sons, four daughters, and fifteen grandchildren. What are some alternatives that Ann and Bob could consider in order to reduce their taxable estate, assuming that the estate tax law is not yet abolished or amended by Congress before the two taxpayers die? What are the consequences if Ann and Bob decide to gift investments worth $1,000,000 to each of their children and grandchildren? What are the consequences of leaving a large estate that will be divided among their children and grandchildren?

You will use R functions to perform various tasks on your data, and use knitR to mix in text, code, and output into a single document. When you are done, you will create a pdf, and that pdf will be your final output that you will upload here.
Start with the statistical functions on slide 44 of the Session Three presentation (Session 3 PDF attached), looking at MPG.
We will be working towards a document that will include summaries, graphs and charts that will allow you to demonstrate various things about the cars in this dataset, their engines, transmissions, and fuel economy.
(Test Drive KnitR) you have to perform statistical operations for which you can refer slide 44 from session 3. Before using the statistical function make sure you have LaTeX installed in your system and even install the package KnitR in RStudio you have to do some settings for which you can refer session 7. Form a simple question which is related to mtcars dataset. Try “? mtcars ” which will provide you details about the variables. Find data of engines, transmission, and fuel economy and try to find relation between the variables. Now perform statistical operation(refer from slide 44 from session 3) to find the solution to your question. In the end you have to knit that page to PDF or HTML.
Before forming the question please do refer slides from session 7 and instructions given for TestDriveKnitR.

Discussion Topic on Government Contracting

You are a Contracts Administrator for a Government contractor. One of your engineering managers found an inconsistency in the specification on a FFP solicitation (i.e., pre-award). He said the worst case could be a $3M loss for defaulting on the spec. You asked him what if the government modified the specs or the price after the award. He beamed, “My division will likely make $3M in profit!” Your CEO wants to win this one because it will lead to more orders from other agencies as well as commercial firms! What is your advice on how your firm should proceed?
Minimum 100 words. Must reference the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR).

Included here are four interesting definitions of TEAMS:
Quinn (1996) described “a team as an enthusiastic set of competent people who have clearly defined roles, associated in a common activity, working cohesively in trusting relationships, and exercising personal discipline and making individual sacrifices for the good of the team” (p. 161).
Team performance functions include getting the job done, making decisions, solving problems, adapting to changes, making plans, and achieving goals. Team development functions include developing a positive climate, solving interpersonal problems, satisfying members’ needs, and developing cohesion (Northouse, 2004).
Effective teams have a clear mission and high performance standards (Hughes et al, 2006).
Cohesive teams trust one another, engage in unfiltered conflict around ideas, commit to decisions and plans of action, hold one another accountable for delivering against those plans, and focus on the achievement of collective results (Lencioni, 2002)
From the four definitions above, buzz words include “accountability,” “standards,” “competent,” “commit,” “performance,” “trusting,” “mission,” and, “cohesion.” Identify a sports organization that successfully developed a team, and presumably met its goal, by effectively adopting one or more of these team functions. Explain how your sports organization of choice embodied teamwork by relying on one of these team performance functions.
Find a sports article or editorial article relevant to the sports organization of your choice, and include it in your written assignment.

Early Care and Education in New York State—Gathering Information

Application Assignment: Early Care and Education New York State—Gathering Information

So far this week, you have studied issues of equity related to early care and education in three specific ways: you read and analyzed articles about equity barriers experienced by young children and families; you listened to an early childhood specialist’s account of ways in which inequity of access and availability affects children and families; and you used the insights gained to propose solutions to one inequity dilemma.

Besides reading about policy issues and proposed solutions, it is your responsibility as an early childhood professional to be informed about ways such policy suggestions and proposed solutions are applied in practice. What is already being done? Are there initiatives that focus on making equal access to quality care and education a reality? What specific information exists that could help you better understand the practical realities of equitable care and education at the state level? This assignment offers you the resources to find answers to these questions. You will use information from the website “Child Care & Early Education Research Connections,” which includes a large collection of research, policy papers, and data relevant to early childhood professionals, as well as links to early care and education information for every state.

In preparation for this Application Assignment, follow these steps:
Access the “Child Care & Early Education Research Connections” state information webpage: http://www.researchconnections.org/childcare/states
Access, availability, affordability, or general equity issues related to early care and education. These may be as varied as a report on a state’s child care assistance policy, or a summary of initiatives to support working parents, or a research report comparing access to nonprofit care versus for-profit care in the state.
Choose three relevant resources and study the full text of each.
Then write:
A brief overview of each of the three resources
What you learned from studying these resources, that is, any new information/insights that deepened your understanding of equity issues regarding early care and education
A citation in APA format of each of the three sources you used

Toward A Compassionate Society

FYS 112 SR – Toward A Compassionate Society – Spring 2017 – Summary and Analysis Essay on your independently read book
Guidelines for Paper 2: at least 3 full pages and a works cited list – MLA format – 10% of the grade. The to-be-graded version is due on February 27. You may rewrite the graded paper for a grade of up to an 88. Again, the rewrite must be substantial, not a “quick fix” of little errors, before it can earn a better grade. I will grade these by the revised Writing Program Rubric, posted on bblearn in the Content section.

In order for your essay to be eligible to earn a grade of better than a C+, you must bring in 3 copies of the completed, printed version at the beginning of class on Friday, February 24 and participate in the peer review. You will turn in one paper copy of the essay to Professor Thomas by the end of class on February 24. If you have a university-excused absence for that day, we’ll find an alternative peer review for you.

As directed on the syllabus, you should select a book that has something to do with compassion and read it independently. While there is a list of books posted on bblearn, that students have used in the past, you are not required to read a book from that list.

Separately from Paper 2, you will give a 5-minute oral report on your selection. The grading rubric for the oral report will be handed out separately.

Paper Assignment.
Pre-think: Consider compassion. Consider the concepts of compassion we have read about this semester in FYS 112. Do this at least twice, for at least 5 minutes each time. Consider compassion with your cell phone OFF and all screens OFF. Listen to music if you wish. Go for a walk if you wish to do so.

The Essay Proper:
Write a summary and analysis of your book, as follows:
Introduction: As Paper 1, but with a thesis that includes an indication of whether your book or
parts of your book expanded your views on what compassion is and/or is not.
Summary: Write a summary of your book (be careful not to plagiarize here – use your own
words or quote properly); no more than 200 words.
Analysis: In at least 3 well-developed body paragraphs, analyze your book by according to
the directions below.
Conclusion: Sum up your explanation and let the reader know what’s important about the
bigger picture.
Work(s) Cited List – MLA format (doesn’t count toward the page total)

By what criteria will you analyze the article? By Criterion 1 AND two additional criteria from the list:
1) Does the book/parts of the book expand your views on what compassion is and what it is not? Refer to concepts of compassion we have found in our reading/viewing.

2) Does the author use appropriate and relevant content to develop ideas?
3) Does the author use language that communicates meaning to the reader?
4) Does the author articulate issues/problems to be considered critically in a manner that defines terms, explores ambiguities, determines boundaries and/or establishes backgrounds?
5) Does the author acknowledge different sides of the issue? Question some assumptions?

You may use I in this essay. You may NOT use you, yours or we in this essay, except in quotations of the words of others.

Why are we doing this? To allow you to read a book that interests you and develop a thoughtful, well-written analysis of whether it has helped you grow.

Remember, how much you like the book may be different from the results of your critical analysis.
